I found that connecting at the highest possible speed (default for most
modems) was slowing things down more often than not (due to re-tries,
noise, re-trains, etc.), so I limit my connect speed and get MUCH better
thruput when browsing. YMMV

The advanced screen has the modem init string, just check your modem manual
for the proper command to add. If you have a US Robotics Courier or a modem
that uses a Rockwell chip I can help, just holler. :)

I've actually found just the opposite for me. Right now I get 49 kbps, but
when I get a 51kbps connection, it's faster than usual. And when I get a
30 kbps connection, it's slower than usual. But in all cases, it's slower
than usual right now.

Not sure which screen you're talking about, but under Modems, General
panel, there's a place to add the max connection. I have a number filled
in there, but "Only connect at this speed" is unchecked.
