I've stupidly deleted the show desktop icon from quick launch toolbar WinXP.
I'd be eternally grateful if any of you good folks could point me to the
location I can restore it from.

No matter, I've found it!
For future reference, if this happens to anyone else the magic formula
is (courtesy of wonderful site www.theeldergeek.com):

If the Show Desktop icon is deleted from Quick Launch, the procedure
below will recreate the file.

Open Notepad and enter the following text:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save the new file as Show Desktop.scf then drag and drop the icon on the
Quick Launch bar or whatever location you want the shortcut to appear.

I see from another post in this thread that you have solved the problem, but
I am curious to know why you need the show desktop icon in the quick launch
toolbar when WindowsKey+D will launch the desktop. Pressing the same keys
again will return you to wherever you were.

Can't speak for the OP, but in some cases it can be faster to make a
mouse click instead of using a keyboard shortcuts -- if you're doing
work which keeps your hand on the mouse, you lose any speed advantage
of the keyboard shortcut by having to switch away and back.

(I use both ways to the desktop, depending on which device I'm using at
the time.)

I take your point, but if using a mouse I prefer to click the Desktop link
on the taskbar (To get it click Taskbar > Properties > Toolbars > Desktop).
From this link you can access not only the Desktop but also its sub-folders
and their contents). This is available in XP -- not sure about other OSs.

A lot of people prefer the quick launch bar. I myself am a total klutz
when it comes to keyboard shortcuts - NEVER use them. HATE them, in fact.

There is still the rightclick menu in the taskbar (if you hover over
the free space, that is)
