ot question re pirate copy of windows

hello group. sorry for the ot question,
i would like to get myself a genuine copy of windows proffesional, but i am
wondering if i then could simply install my legal version over my present
dodgy copy? or would i have to format and start afresh?
it has taken me a long time to get my system working to my liking and i
would be loath to start from scratch

The general advice on this is:

Use the new legit copy to do a 'repair install'.
Enter your new legit product key when asked, and then activate it.
