Can anyone reccommend a "pattern part" glossy or semi glossy paper that
works well with Epson dye based printers, and pigment based printers, (I've
got a R300 and a C82), and is LOTS cheaper than the ridiculously priced
Epson papers. There's TONS of information on the web and I got completeley
lost.
Tons of good advice out there on the web about sticking with printer
manufacturers papers and inks for lots of good reasons but, there MUST be
someone out there who has an understanding of the ink/paper processes /
reactions / compatibilities etc. who has discovered a much cheaper and
"almost as good as" Epson manufacturered paper.

TIA

Have a look at the following site:

....indeed I am :-)

....I've been contuing to rummage around the web, so b****y time consuming,
and found :-
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a720x1y0z1p0s0n1m0
but, the last time I bought "budget" inket glossy paper, it was rubbish, and
suffered mass-miniature crazy-paving when a photo was printed onto it !!
....can't remember whether that was using it my dye-based or pigment ink
based printer. Which brings me on to another issue, some paper's coatings
expands when ink hits it, some don't (porous papers), some are built to
receive dye based inks and some for pigment based inks and all-in-all it's a
massively complicated issue but, I can't afford to buy Epson paper at around
£10 to £15 for just 20 sheets, that's simply an OBSCENE price !!

I tried Kodak semi-glossy a few months ago - VERY disappointing - and a
print would take AGES to dry.

....I got the impression whilst digging around the web that there are only a
few manufacturers of paper, so someone out there must know of some
substitute papers that give really good results, and are a much cheaper that
Epson paper.

Epson prices beggar belief, when one considers that chemically
processed/traditional colour photgraphic paper, with multi-layer coating and
silver, is comparativley expensive to produce. The Epson paper is just
paper with a coating to match some characteristics of the ink sprayed onto
it ! Obviously they did a lot of research and development to ensure good
results but, one wonders how much of that was simply to ensure that
competitors materials wouldn't work as well as their own !

....thanks Brian, I spent some time there, even tried to register and post a
message but, gave up in the end.

....thanks anyway :-)

Hi again RJK
I am not into this photo stuff, but I know a man who is in a big way i.e.
semi pro and enters UK digital photo competitions. He has an Epson
printer - does not use their paper.
He uses a very expensive paper for his work - but for 'proof' printing, the
last time I spoke to him he was using the better quality paper from
'Imagepro'
He and I used to get this from Viking, who do a good range of papers.
Try their web site -

I am not in the UK, but I found that it is more economical for me to place
the photographs onto a flash drive then take them to the Photo Laboratory.
The chain pharmacy and other have the labs here.
The above is just FWIW.....

....a discovery, ASDA (as in foodstore) - 50 A4 sheets glossy £7.95 -
fantastic results on Epson R300, instruction sheets says fine for pigment
based printers - not tried them in my C82 yet.
