Hi Guys,

My work has blocked the only account that could use to check my personal
emails. Its very crap i know that its not fair
to use company's email address for personal use however if they block other
ways how can we deal with it ...

I just wonder is there any other ways to receive emails?, is there any other
type of email accounts to open that they can't
block? Is anyone else having this issue? Any other solutions?

They are not your computers. You are also at work doing paid
employment. You are not supposed to be carrying out something personal
in their time.

hello,

I didn't see the bit that said, "I want to check emails when i should be
working". Companies have different policies, for example they let people
have personal calls on the phone and some will let people use email for
personal use. So it depends on where you work. Some only allow it after
you have clocked out, but are still "at work" but not working by being on
the premises.
The question was not over whether the person was allowed to or not, it was
how to. I think you have replied to the wrong message, or not bothered to
read it properly based on the answer you have given.

What you mean is I've not given an answer you liked.

Where I work ($Mega_IT_Company), limited use of the computer systems is
allowed for personal use. This includes checking webmail, online
banking, online shopping, etc. Some companies have a zero tolerance
policy, some do not. Now if I were to spend hours a day on the web,
they would write me up.

It really does depend on who you work for. No one here will advocate
someone cheating your employer no matter how much they may piss you off.

Good. When at work you are meant to be working. If you are allowed to
see personal emails at work then simply ask your computer system
administrator for help to do so.

Get Gmail. If they block that, quit. If it's a very narrowed-minded
company, much like the mind-set of John Fitzsimons and others who
answered this post who must work in an animal eviscerating line that won't
let you check your own email on your own time at lunch then they don't
really care about you do they?
Think about it. If you are from the USA, get another job, if that is that
important to you.
If any of the losers who have answered this thread work eight hours a day
non-stop like they have you believe I'll eat my shit.

You are right dszady,

No one is working full 8 hrs. at least i have 1 hr lunch break ... so what?
i want to check my personal email
at company but at my spare time ... its fully stupid to block all personal
emails. What employees should do
they spend at least 8 or more hrs at work and couple of hrs at travel. Then
how do they manage their personal
issues. EG i might be student and need to log in to my uni web mail and
check my emails which is totally legit ...

it is totally bullshit and i think these companies with zero tolernece
should be kicked in their ass and we need to
find ways to break them.!!!

Would you like that served on white or whole wheat?

Is the problem, that you cant access a webmail-account ?

If your company has blocked your access to a POP3-account via a normal
email-client try www.mail2web.com - here you can access a POP3-account via
the web.

I have no problem - I wait until I get home to use my computer to
check my personal email!

Then check it at home or in an internet cafe. Having a lunch break
doesn't entitle you to use your employers computer.

Is this alt.comp.freeware, or did I stumble into alt.lectures.morality
by mistake?

No worries mate - the lecture is free too...

I didn't see the bit that said, "I want to check emails when i should be

Maybe it was the nature of your question that led some to read into
it. There are web-based readers that will let you check almost any
email you want to. Even if your email is POP and POP access is
restricted, services like www.mail2web.com or www.mailreader.com can
get at it.

Your question may simply reflect lack of knowledge that there is
wide-spread web-based access to email available. But if in fact, your
company is blocking access to mail2web, mailreader.com, yahoo mail,
hotmail, mail.com, g-mail, etc, it's a pretty good bet that they don't
want you using their computers for personal email purposes.

I'm a security admin at just such a company.
It is not "fully stupid to block all personal emails".

1: It's a matter of not wanting viruses and other malware to run rampant
on your network, downloaded by some user who found a way around the
lockout. We block pop3 ports and a group of IM ports for just that
reason. IT guys are not "Nazi's." They are trying to keep the network
operating, so they can continue to get paid (go figure). At our company,
policy on computer use is not decided by IT, it is decided by HR. Our
people are given the policy and asked to sign it BEFORE they get hired.

2: Some companies with "zero tolerance" may have to be that way. I know
that financial institutions must block third-party email servers from
staff, as a precaution against insider trading. If they don't, they can
get their accreditation pulled by the S.E.C. This amounts to a death
sentence for the company. NOBODY wants to fool with the S.E.C. rules.
Insurance companies are bound by HIPPA restrictions, and therefore must
control messaging systems staff can access.

My point is that a company's rules may not be made up to give workers a
hard time. There are legal and ethical issues involved. If you don't
like a company's rules, work somewhere else where the rules don't need
to be as strict.

Just injecting a little reality into the debate...
