Hi OT,

In Holland those names are as well still used.

The Dutch pound (was 485 gram now exactly 500 gram) and as well the Duim
(Thump) about 2,5 cm which is probably something the same as an inch.

The (sea) miles are still as normal measurement used in Holland (as far as I
know everywhere on the world).

Mijlen is Miles
Duim is Thumb
Palm is Palm of the hand
Na is After
Voor is Before
Roede a classic measurment name
Span is the maximum span from the hand

nautical mile (knot) = 1 minute of longditude at the equator - so a sensible unit:-)
Kilometre = 1/100 of a degree of longditude at the equator - except they got it wrong!

good point, i was referring to the British, as in 'Imperial Units':-)
btw did Napoleon also enforce the 'driving on the right side of the road' or was that someone else?
