trojan
problem was it was a trojan that got into winlogin.exe

False positives are one of the nastier problems with anti-malware software.
Microsoft has an excellent (but not perfect by any means) record in this
regard--they fix things fast, and have had very few in objective comparative
testing. But it happens to every vendor, and probably some measure related
to this kind of occurrence should be part of anybody's rating system.
