Modem Ani

Sorry if this is a little OT.

Can someone recommend a keyboard that makes a noticeably softer sound when
the keys are pressed than is typical of the keyboards usually sold in
computer stores? A search of the Windows newsgroups hasn't provided any joy
thus far. I do a lot of typing at night, after the family has gone to bed,
and the clatter of my standard issue Dell keyboard becomes really noticeable
in a quiet house.

Modem Ani:
With respect to Carey's recommendation of the Belkin keyboard...
I notice Office Max is closing out the Fellowes brand of keyboards for $7.
The box indicates the KB has "Quiet Key Technology", the same "technology"
that the Belkin touts. I've never used either KB so can't comment on their
"quietness" or lack of, but thought you might want to take a look at the
Fellowes one if you're convenient to an OM store.

Have you tried all of the keyboards?.. at one time I used a Microsoft
Internet keyboard, and hated the clacky sounds that it made.. a visit to the
local Staples branch later, I came back with a very quiet Logitech
keyboard.. you are looking to pay more than $7 for a decent one..

I am and I will. Thanks.

In the absence of a published standard I use a very unscientific method to
test a keyboard. First, I make sure no one is looking. Then I place my ear
close to the keys and start tapping. I also apply the MATE - Modem Ani
Tactile Evaluation - since a keyboard with a 'soft touch' will tend to be
more quiet.

So far I haven't found a keyboard by MS or Logitech that meets my wholly
subjective standard. I have fond memories of keyboards from Apple during the
early '90s that were hushed and like Rockports for the fingers. When I find
the 'right' keyboard I'll be glad to spend much more than 7 bucks for it!

LOL.. so you are the person I saw acting in a furtive manner around the
keyboard section.. I don't feel the need to get my ear quite as close as you
do, but I see nothing wrong in openly trying them out..

Next time I see you doing that in a store, I will ask if you can hear the
ocean.. :)

Good luck in your quest.. and keep up the good work, Agent Modem Ani.. when
it is time for you to come in from the cold, don't call us. we'll call you..
:)
