OS should be part of the background

Is it just me, but shouldn't the OS just be part of the background and not
have to have ANY attention paid to it? I have a computer to run programs
other than my OS, Vista is just too frustrating and uses far too many system
resources. I have use Microsoft products since MS-Dos 3.0 and the trend has
been to require more RAM, more processor speed just for the OS. That is just
plain wrong.

I am removing it and putting XP back on, when that doesn't work any more I
will go else where.

Elive Linux runs quite nicely on a P166 with 64mb RAM.

Well its like any new program or any new OS, the resources it will
require will be higher than the previous version! My job is a computer
programmer, and in my opinion, it would be crazy to no utilise resources
that are going to be popular in the future!

If you had a nose as bloated as an elephants.. I would think you would go
get it hacked a bit...:-)

and vista is fat as an elephant...

My ongoing question is: Vista? Elegant or Elephant?

Vista is neither too much nor too little and fulfills the computing
needs of 99% of all users.
If you were to understand all of the needs of all of the computing
public you will end up with Vista.
If you delete all that you personally don't need nor use you would be
eliminating something that the remaining 98% of computers need or use.

I know a lot of people are having problems with it. And the box makers
aren't doing a very good job of putting together systems that work. But I
built a system for Vista and it totally rocks. Puts XP (which is on the same
machine) to shame.

When I have Vista and all my main apps open (Visual Studio, graphics editor,
couple of browsers, word processor, several folders), that all eats up about
43% of my 2GB RAM. Trivial, if you ask me. And I have a ton of files in my
search index too.

Hard disk space is usage is obviously trivial, since both Vista and XP
combined hardly put a dent in my cheap $90 320GB SATA II hard drive.

My desktop resolution is 3072 x 768 across three monitors from one cheap
video card with 512 MB. No problem at all.

Everything works as expected. (Not old stuff, but stuff that's in Vista or
designed for Vista).

I haven't even installed a ReadyBoost drive yet, but Vista still totally
kicks butt on XP in general speed and productivity. And the system was cheap
to build. So I don't consider it an elephant at all. It uses a small amount
of additional (but cheap) resources to totally outperform its predecessors.

But obviously, your mileage may vary.
