OS not found

Purchased used PC 510c with XP home supposedly installed. When turning on all I get is blue HP screen. Hit F10 repeatedly for recovery, got black screen saying "operating system not found". Tried a different hard drive with 98SE, works fine. Any suggestions?
 
Would you buy a uses car without driving it ? You are asking for the wrath
of the Empire to come down on you with a question like this young Skywalker.
