OS failure after installing sp1

My laptop went into "standby" while it was installing sp1. When I brought it out of standby, it had lost it's link with windows update and warned me of OS problems. I chose the option to "undo" my changes up to that point to prevent any potential OS problems. Unfortunely the laptop froze up while it was becoming "undone". I eventually had to shut it down. Now when it restarts it never reaches the login screen, the blue screen appears and the mouse will move for a short period of time then it will reboot. I was wondering if I re-installed the OS, from a CDROM, choosing the repair option if I would be able to get my system running again. I haven't done this before and I don't know what is required. My goal here is to retrieve documents. Any insight and/or hyperlinks to knowledge bases would be appreciated.

Thanks, Adam

Adam;
A Repair Installation is good at this point:
