Windows notified me it had downloaded some files for update and to complete
to restart system Put if off as working. Next day did so, and at start up the
HD was just clicking away for at least 15 minutes, nearly continuously.
During this time, the login screen finally came up, I entered password and it
just accepted then did nothing for another few mintues. I thought maybe the
system was comprimised and data being deleted so I reset. Upon restarting
again, message stated OS wouldn't start as the system file was missing and or
corrupt. What can I do short of reinstalling OS?

And WHY DOESN'T MICROSOFT HAVE A ANOTHER SCREEN COME UP INFORMING CUSTOMER
OF THE UPDATE, INSTEAD OF THE LOGIN SCREEN???

The issue is that you should have restarted your computer
when Windows Update requested you to do so. Now
you'll need to perform a "Repair Install".

Should? Why then did it give me the option to do it later??? Confused..

Also, strange thing now is, installed a second copy of XP on another
partition to get at some files on C, just in case had to just reinstall os,
and now at restart both OSs indicated the same error message of missing and
or corrupt system file. And apparently, not deleting that gui file what,
made it so I couldn't get my bookmark file under the program apps??

Is 15 mins ligit to update the os? Can't ever remember it taking so long...
This is not a 286 cpu, it's 95 nm technology etc.

You can change automatic update options, via "System" in control panel.

I can't really agree that you should have restarted immediately. If MS can't
make these updates foolproof they shouldn't offer them.

Well, typical. Lost 2 more days cause thought I'd wait for some intelligent
response as to what is going on and recover the primary OS, but can see
that's not happening. Forced to reinstall on C and wipe away the file I
needed.

BEY BILL: TELL YOUR ENGINEERS TO MAKE A SCREEN THAT SAYS - 'DON'T TOUCH
ANTHING, WINDOWS IS BEING UPDATED ETC.' - BEFORE THE LOG ON SCREEN COMES UP...

....never ceases to amaze me
