optimizing RBS load efficiency

I've found that the RBS subsystem included with XPe has pretty bad
performance. In the worst case I may need to download 150 devices
simultaneously but my RBS server reaches 100% CPU utilization when
downloading only a few devices. This is despite the fact that the GB
ethernet link is less than 5% utilized.

My current SDI is 150Mbytes and I can zip it down to about 35Mbytes (77%
efficiency). Is there a way that I can transmit a compressed image and get
a 4:1 bitrate gain? I am using FAT16 so file system supported compression
is not an option and it wouldn't give me the efficiency I mentioned anyway.
Also, if anyone can point me to a significantly better RBS scenario than the
thing that comes out of the box, I'd be grateful.

Thanks, we have looked at the Ardence product in detail. It uses a two
stage process of first unicasting a small image to each device that provides
multi-cast TFTP capability. Then all devices can be loaded from the same
stream via multi-cast. For various reasons we did not find this scheme to
be a good match. It seems to me that it should be possible to get much
greater efficiency loading the devices over a GBe than the 4 or 5% I see
from the MS RBS. Our own applications do much better than this over the
same link.
