Check out the Query Analyzer and see the query plan for the LIKE variations
you're executing. For example, if you code
".... WHERE x LIKE 'y%' "
the QO might find that an index can quickly locate the row. On the other
hand if you code:
".... WHERE x LIKE '%y' "
the QO must do a rowscan--the indexes can't help.
