Operation failed

I have encountered a problem that occurs quite frequently when accessing MS
Office Outlook.
Running XP + SP2.
When I try to open Outlook an error message is displayed
The Operation Failed.
I then have to reboot my PC .
An suggestions on what the problem is and how to correct would be most
welcomed

What version of Outlook/Office, and is Office fully patched at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx ?
