Operating System hangs.

The Xp operating system hangs occasionally, sometimes as early as boot up. On some occasions it happens 3 or 4 times in a sequence, before it 'flushes' out and I would be able to use the computer safely for a longer period
There is another annoying event, which could be related: while on the internet, at odd instances IE comes up with a box telling me that due to circumstances beyond it's control, it has to close down and tries to tell me some technical bumf why it is so. The curious thing about this message is that once you click on the OK button to accept the inevitable, half the time it does not close down and I can merrily carry on without any problem
Has anybody come accross these hassles???
 
do you do basic maintenance? empty tif/history/scan disk/defrag?
