Hi,

It appears that I screwed up big time. I was supposed to be updating a
display driver ... followed instruction to remove old driver ... restarted
in
Diagnostic Startup mode ... now I have no display and have no idea what is
going
on.

Any help for a blind operator?

See "How to Restore the Operating System to a Previous State in
Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306084). You can do
this ffrom the Safe Mode, where the video card should still work.

Thanks, I've tried getting XP into Safe Mode by by both continuously hitting
F8 and also by holding F8 on startup without success (I think) ... of course
I can't see anything ... so I don't know what's actually going on. I was
thinking of some kind of bootable "rescue disc" with display drivers on it
as a possibility ....???

You can use msconfig boot options to have it boot to safe
mode on the next startup.

Are you saying that you can't even see the menu that allows you to choose
Safe Mode, or that once you're in Safe Mode you can't see anything?

If you are getting nothing on the display even when the computer is
first turned on then that is a hardware issue and not a Windows driver
issue. You need to check out your monitor (it may have died) and the
connection to the computer.

Good luck

If by chance you are using an agp or pci video card and also have onboard
video - Plug the monitor cable into the onboard connection.

RonK, you hit it right on! Too bad I didn't have the benefit of your wisdom
a few days back. It would have saved me a lot of money and an awesome amount
of work.

To all the rest who tried to help:

Thanks for the responses. It appears that removing the ATI drivers prevented
me from getting anything at all on my monitor while hooked up to my ATI
card. Turns out that I have another monitor connection ... evidently to a
motherboard video output? (I have no other video card installed) That
monitor connection worked fine. But while fumbling around in the "dark"
(without a monitor) I did incredible damage to my system and the only thing
that could be done was to restore the computer to it's original
configuration with restore discs. Incredible what damage a few misdirected
key strokes can cause. Now ... lots of work ahead.

Sorry I was late with the info ! LOL
We all never stop learning.
