Opera 7.0 Beta 1, released 13 November 2002.

The tab option is not "rather than", it is in addition to MDI. It is
definitely possible to use Opera without wasting space for that bar.

I think that that must be a very early version of Opera.

Later versions gave you the choice between SDI (tabs) and MDI (multi
window) users of one of these didn't alwys know the other way
existed!

The more recent versions of Opera allow you to detach a single page
so that the page itself has it's own tab on the Windows Taskbar.

Official feature lists are here:

so what would be a good version if i wanted to use MDI instead of tabs
?

You want to use an old version of a browser that is not being kept up
to date with security patches? I take it you are are not planning to
use such software on a computer connected to the Internet?

8.52, released today. Turn off "Page bar" from View | Toolbars, uncheck
"Show close button on each tab" on the General sheet of Preferences.

The same works for the Opera 9 previews, but they've renamed the bar to
"Tab bar".

no i'm just not gonna be stoopid and surf un known sites

I can't see why you would not use the latest version of Opera. It
works well and is a little bit faster than some of its more recent
predecessors.

If Opera is not to your liking then there are several IE from ends
which offer tabbed browsing like Maxthon or Avant.

And of course Firefox has got tabbed browsing.

I believe the next version of IE from Microsoft will have tabbed
browsing.

Opera allows mdi.
First in "Tools - Preferences - General" uncheck "Show close button on each
tab".
Then in "Tools - Appearance - Toolbars" uncheck "Tab bar".

You'll see the minimize, maximize, close buttons of each document and a new
"Window" menu.
