I have a CD of files I made from my old computer, but they do not open on my
new computer. Little squares are all that display. My old computer had office
2000, my new one has office 2003. How do I get the text of those word
documents to show?

You'll need to copy the files to your hard disk and change them from
read-only (using Windows Explorer) if you want to work on them. But that
doesn't explain the little boxes. Have you used a strange font? Try
selecting the entire document and applying a default font like Times or
Arial.

Failing that, experiment with the options listed under 'Files of Type' on
the File Open dialog.

Pardon me for horing in on this thread..I was not able to find the switch to
start a new question...my question is:
I have a bunch of Word Files with ~$ in front of it....click on Properties
show that thw whole file is present...however, when I open the I get
this text file: Lina M. Souza (whole bunch of boxes)..which appears to be
my wife's email address...how do I open these files?

This is the "owner" file. See “Description of how Word creates temporary
filesâ€
