I have several files created with Word in Windows 6. I've transferred the
files to my new laptop but Windows 7 can't open them. Is there a way? Thank
you.

Sorry, what PRECISELY do you mean by "Windows 6" and "Windows 7"? There's no
such thing.......

Regardless of the confusion about Windows/Word 6 or 7,
you should post your question in a Word newsgroup, not
in a Windows newsgroup.

Hello Gordon,

There are some -- and you can see this numbering scheme in the Program Files
folder -- who refer to versions of Word using the following numbering
"scheme:"

Word for Windows 6, which also shipped as part of Office 4.3, is called Word
6
Word for Windows 95, which also shipped as part of Office 95, is called Word
7
Word for Windows 97, which also shipped as part of Office 97, is called Word
8
Word for Windows 2000, which also shipped as part of Office 2000, is called
Word 9
Word for Windows 2002, which also shipped as part of Office XP/2002, is
called Word 10
Word for Windows 2003, which also shipped as part of Office 2003, is called
Word 11

I'm wondering if someday we'll be up to Word 485. :>

Do you have a copy of Word in your newer system? Word does not
automatically come with any Windows operating system. If you don't
want to spend the bucks for Word, you can download a free viewer from
the MS web site.

That will allow you to see the documents, but not to edit them. To do
that, you can use open office (www.openoffice.com). It's word
processing component will open and edit *.doc files. And it's free.
