opening pictures inserted in e-mail

i have been unable to open pictures when sent as inserts.
i have downloaded java virtual machine...that does not
help. i downloaded the java program with the zipper
icon . still no help. no problem with picture attachments
 
On the toolbar, options, security tab, un-tick "Do not allow attachments to be saved
or opened that could potentially be a virus".
