My Microsoft outlook automatically saves my outlook files
periodically into outlook backup.pst on my hard drive
where it is archived. When I try to open it, it tries to
use WinZip or asks me what program I want to use, none of
which seem to open it. Is there a special program I need
to open these pst files? Do I need to copy it onto a CD
then open it? Bottom line, how do I retrieve or access
the file?

You must use the import/export option under the File
Menu. Import .pst files from the location in which they
are stored.

Use the FILE menu and select OPEN

Then depending on what version of Outlook you are using...

Select PERSONAL FOLDERS FILE (.PST)...
or
Select OUTLOOK DATA FILE...

Then browse to the pst, select it.

Actually, import is not the best option. It's better to simply open the
..PST file in Outlook (it can't be opened from Windows). The following
article should help to explain the process further (it applies to any .PST
file, not just ones created via AutoArchive):
