opening old email msg causes outlook to lock/crash

new condition - when i go to open old email msgs outlook locks up and
eventually dies. I have to use task mgr to shut down and when i look to see
what cause is i get "hungapp". how do i fix this? I can open new emails and
the system is fine.
 
These messages were saved with what Outlook version?
What Outlook version are you using now?
What is logged to the Event Viewer?

I'm using Outlook 2003. following is a copy from the event viewer

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 1001
Source: Application Hang
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: DW_BUCKET_LOG
Message: Fault bucket %1.


I've reloaded the software and it still is hanging up the same way. No new
add-ins or anything between yesterday and today (when the problem started).

More info if this helps...(in looking at the event user I've discovered a lot
of these applicationhang-ups for Outlook)

I used the Office program disk and removed/reinstalled Outlook. Following is
most recent info from Event Mgr:

Symbolic Name: ER_HANG_LOG
Message: Hanging application %1, version %2, hang module %3, version %4,
hang address 0x%5.
