Opening new Word document gives modification not allowed message.

Modification not allowed because the selection is locked is the message I get
when trying to type in a new Word document.
I had earlier saved other documents to the earlier versions so that other
co-workers could view them when I send documents to them.
Can someone please help me figure out how I can type like normal again in
Word 2007? I desperately need this to work for my job.
Please help me restore the settings.
 
Is this a retail version of Office 2007 or a trial version that has expired?
