When trying to open a network folder by using file>open in word or excel
(office xp), the pc will hang and usually the program just stops responding
eventually. CPU utilization goes up to 100% and this is because word.exe is
using all of it. This is running on a windows2000 pro pc. We've done all
the office updates, and even did a complete clean install of office
(including cleaning out the registry) but this is still happening. Any ideas?

Hi Rob,

Are there any mapped network drives or FTP locations that
are not available?

Is the printer driver associated with the printer selected
in File=>Print a network printer?

Are/were the templates for these documents on a network
folder (available or no longer available)?

If you start Word using Start=>Run
Winword.exe /A
do you get the same result? If not, look for an add-in
that Word may be using.

If the folder has a lot of files Word/Excel will read the
listing then sort them. That may take a bit longer on
a network connection than on a local hard drive.

I checked/tried all these, but still it still hangs. I'm beginning to think
it could be more related to the OS rather than just the office programs.
Thanks for the suggestions.
