Opening folder from Zip drive

I copied about 100 photos to my removable storage - a Zip drive - and have
successfully retrieved them in the past. When I tried today, Windows timed
out due to size and stats showed there are 1 million files in the folder.
Anybody have any idea what happened and how I can recover? I scanned and
found no virus.

ZIP drives and ZIP disks, especially aged ones, are not known for their
longevity or reliability. Best way to recover the photos would be to find
another computer with a known working ZIP drive and transfer the contents
to a more stable drive, such as an USB jumpdrive or flash drive or even
burn the photo files on to a CD-R.

Thanks for your help. The zip drive i am using works, it is the file created
with it that is corrupt - it has over 1 million empty folders with scrampled
names (like symbols). I thought I might be able to get help in recovery from
a professional service - what do you think?
