First I was born before 1960 and my tech speak is limited. Every time I try
to open a word document it states in lower left hand corner "running virus
scan". Why is it doing this and why dose it now take upto 10 MIN!!!!! to
open even a one page document that "I" wrote yesterday. I just got a new
system to replace my old one and could not order with windows xp. Vista has
been a nightmare for me. Every thing takes forever to open and to try and
figure out. Did not receive ANY printed documentation for VISTA with new
system. The same messages and time frame happens ever time I try to open and
attachment from my email account. Is there some setting I need to turn off
or on??? Please help!!! I like the speed and look of my new system and don't
want to use voodoo to bring back my old system.

What antivirus program is installed on your computer?

What every came loaded with Vista. There is Norton on the system but I have
not activated it.

You should completley destroy Norton being on your system. If you want some
good virus protection, AVG is where it's at. You can get the free version of
AVG here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-free75cnv/lng/us/tpl/v5 but
it you are using the computer for business, go ahead and buy the full
version here http://www.grisoft.com/ .

Your virus scanner (especially Noroton) is set to execute (run) itself on a
regular basis. When a virus scan is performed it will usually suck up quite
a bit of RAM, hence it makes you computer go slower. Virus scans DO usually
take up to and over 10 minutes to complete.

Today you are in luck, because you are "now" aware that those settings can
be changed. Simply open up your virus software and you will see options and
settings, and you should see something similar to "scheduler" or something
of the sort. This will allow you to chhange how often and when the software
to perform a virus scan. If your computer is always on, set it for a time
that you are not normally on the computer, like 3 AM every other day. Or
you can disable the scheduler to not automatically run at all, but don't
forget to manually run it at least once a week.

Hope that helps.
