Opening 2 or more files simultaneously in Excel or Word

I am trying to open several Excel or Word files at once,
ie. select 2 or more files, right click, then click open,
but I cannot get them to open at the same time. Left-
clicking on the toolbar File/Open does not work either. I
have to open each file separately. I can have several
files open at once but they must be opened individually.
I have tried this on other computers, mine seems to be
the only one with the problem.

Don't open 2 files using one copy of Word. Open 1 file using Word. Now
open another copy of Word itself. Open the other file in that Word. Now
you can right click on an open area of your taskbar and tile them
horizontally. That way you can click and drag stuff from one file to the
other if you wish. This really helps in your files are in entirely
different places. Like one on your hard drive and another file is on a
remote server.
