Don't get me wrong, I used to like Arj about a decade ago. Performance
was (as far as I can remember) on par with PKZip, and I found it much
more useful and user friendly.

However, today you have formats such as 7-Zip, which are way superior to
both zip and arj. And if you would like to open dusty arj archives there
are plenty of free options, including open source command line ones.

Hello,

compression:

Anyone tried? Any experiences?

I am using it and have had no problem with the archives it produces in other
programs. ARJ has tons of commands/switches which makes it very versatile.
The only and major problem is that you can't create archives larger than 2
GB. Both ARJ and ZIP have for a long time been surpassed by more efficient
archivers. I am migrating to RAR (www.rarlabs.com). It has better
compression and the ability to add a time code to the archive name making it
more suited for backup tasks than zip og 7z. Neither have this ability.

Hi!

ARJ was great. I think I still prefer it over RAR in DOS. Although I
had learned the RAR-console and do archiving from time to time in DOS
with RAR2.50, too.
I think ARJ is possibly faster than RAR.

WinRAR is my favourite. Solid-archives etc.... and fast (my ol'
celeron700 was faster in packing than a athlon1300 Thunderbird)!
The Freeware version of WinRAR is also very good!
Also the 2.50 DOS-version is seemingly without limits.

RAR is not freeware last I heard.

I think it is okay to ask, why I look for a specific solution
or topic, but after that a answer to open ARJ is more helpful
to me. I already know about other archivers, but know many
options on ARJ I liked. F.e. I'm not looking for some bytes
less in archiving, hard disks are big enough nowadays.

Arlid gave me the answer I'm looking for...

Thorsten

AFAIK only UnRAR is free to use, do you have some more
informations on your free WinRAR?

but you do know, that this here is alt.comp.freeware?

No limitation in shareware version does not mean it is fair
or legal to use it without paying on the long run.
