Open programs while doing upgrade

I will be sending out xp sp2 thru SMS.My question is, can the user have open
programs or browse the internet while the xp sp2 upgrade is going on in their
machines or will this mess up the upgrade

This is a major operating system upgrade. It would be extremely risky to
have anything running while doing the install.

Accidentally tried that once; SP2 refuses to install. And I imagine trying
to start anything during the install would also be refused but don't know
for sure; just makes sense. It was a long time ago so I don't have any
precise details to provide other than what's here.
