Open new docs and errors

I've had my Dell computer with the Windows Office XP Edition for about two years. Both these problems started about six months ago

First, I have to be careful to constantly save my work because often a small screen pops up: Word has caused errors and has to be closed down (with the option to send an error log to microsoft). Any idea why this would happen constantly

Second, when I open a new doc or close old&new docs, it is so-o-o sl-o-o-o-w. How can I speed it up

Thanks for your help

You might try the troubleshooting tips at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm (which cover more
than just opening Word), but if the problems are intermittent, it may be
difficult to establish a single cause.

In addition to Suzanne's suggestion you first need to clear up the mess -

Chances are that the problems are related to some dubious add-in. My guess
is the Norton AV office plug-in, but Winfax Pro, the wrong version of
Acrobat and sundry others could be at fault.
