I am confused as to how a hyperlink works in excel. I would like t
have an excel file open in internet explorer instead of the true excel
It seems like sometimes it does and sometimes it doesnt. I hav
individuals who only need to view the file not do any editing. I don
want to save the excel file as an HTML cause it alters the formatting.
Any suggestions or comments

Hi Mike,
I can't recall linking to an HTML file and not having it open in Internet
Explorer. Of course you could use another browser.

1) I always code the complete url address: http://www.nbc.com
2) Check your options in
My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, look down for XLS
then advanced button then Open -- what do you see for the application
I have --
Application used: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
[X] DDE message
DDE options: "file://%1",,-1,,,,,
Application: IExplore
DDE Application Not Running: (empty)
Topic: WWW_OpenURL

don't know if those are best or even if they are default settings but that is what
I have.

You have a link to an excel file on a web page?

And you want to click on the link to the .xls file and have excel open--not open
the workbook inside Internet Explorer?

(Slightly different from the way David McRitchie interpreted the question)

If all that is true, then there's a setting inside Windows that controls this.

In win98, I can do this:
Start Windows Explorer
View|Folder Options
File Types Tab
scroll down to MS Excel Worksheet
Select it
click the edit button
There's an option to "browse in same window". Uncheck it.

That's where you can toggle the "confirm open after download", too.
