Windows does not open docs in separate windows. I have checked the "windows
in taskbar" option. Suspect a bug of some kind.

I'm assuming you are using Excel 2003. By default, when you double-click a
second Excel Workbook or open if from the File Open menu, it should appear
as two separate taskbar items. This assumes you don't have other
applications open with Taskbar "Grouping" enabled. Even in that situation,
the two workbooks should appear as separate items in the Taskbar Group.

However, closing these documents is a different story. If you only want to
close one, right-click the item on the Taskbar and select close. Clicking
the red 'x' in the Excel Windows TitleBar will close both Workbooks and the
Excel Application.

Tks but my problem is not with the taskbar. There I have 2 separate items. My
problem is that both items opens in the same Excel main window. Not as 2
completely separate Excel windows.

That's normal.

You need to restore down the excel workbook. Open both workbooks. On
the far top right of the excel workbook window click restore down and
both workbooks will appear in two seperate windows.

another option is to open both workbooks and then click Window in excel
and select compare side by side.

I am quite sure that before in XP I used to be able to have Excel docs open
in separate Excel windows. For some reason this feature is gone now. How to
get it back?

I'm not sure on that, you would be more likely to get a more accurate
answer in the Excel group and be sure to mention the version you
are/were using.

I think it is windows related. I found now a way to start separate excel
sessions - it is when I launch excel through start program button, but I
really would like toi have it the way it worked before. That is when I double
click on an excel file it launches a separate excel session in a separate
window. This is the way it works in word and for some reason it stopped work
like that in excel. Same thing happened with acrobat files.???
