Hi all, just got a new machine with Win XP and have now noticed that when I
receive an attached 'link' ( one sent from a IE page using File, Send, Link
by email... ), when I go to open it I get a "Open Attachment Warning"
dialogue box with the 'what wold you like to do ... questions'. I have tried
going into Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types and setting anything
showing the IE icon to open without prompt but nothing seems to eliminate
the warning box or the grayed out 'always ask' box at the bottom. Thanks,
Harris

( and sorry about the cross posting but I dont know if it primarily a XP or
an OE problem )

In OE go to Tools | Options | Security and uncheck "Do not allow
attachments...".

Frank, I appreciate your response; unfortunately I don't believe it
addresses my exact problem. The 4ht box was unchecked on the
OE/Tools/Options/Security tab already. Also the less functional security
internet zones and levels were already set and are the same in IE and OE.
I've read your 3 cited references again and specifically I've double checked
the 4 steps in the middle of 291387 and still can't get rid of the warning
dialogue box for a simple linked url. Any more suggestions. Thanks, Harris

Hi Frank, thanks for being persistent. I'm not getting an error message.
The problem is more of a annoyance and the fact that I didn't have this kind
of problem in WinME. When I'm sent an attached website link, when I go to
open the attachment in the attachment line under the subj, I get a dialogue
box label "Open Attachment Warning" which then gives me the 'what would you
like to do with this file' options of Opening or Saving to disk. The small
checkbox preceding the "always ask before opening ..." is grayed out not
allowing me the option of turning the box off for future reference. My
question is 'how can I avoid getting the opening dialogue box warning': by
my way of thinking clicking on a link should not be a 3 different click
process. Thanks, hk

Send Link by Email sends a file with a URL extension. I have a File Type
for *.url and it has a "Confirm open after download" box which you could
uncheck to eliminate this message, but I recommend that you NOT do so.

Hi Harris,

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types/[File Type in
Question]/Advanced. Put a check in the box that reads: Confirm open after
download.

Enable Always Ask Before Opening... (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

This problem may be caused by this registry settings. Start/Run/Regedit

When you first choose to download a file in Internet Explorer, you receive a
Confirm File Open dialog box. The "Always ask before opening this type of
file" check box in this dialog box is selected.

If you clear the "Always ask before opening this type of file" check box,
the registry entry for this setting is changed and you do not see the
Confirm File Open dialog box in subsequent download sessions. Instead,
Internet Explorer automatically opens files instead of downloading them.

To resolve this problem, enable the "Always ask before opening this type of
file" option. To do so, go to Start/Run/Regedit and modify the third octet
for the EditFlags value in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile value from 01 to
00.

I think he wants to get rid of the box, which would mean Unchecking "Confirm
open after download".
