I have a 3-1/2 floppy that I can't open. When I try to
open it, I get a pop up box that says the fopppy is "read
only" or can't be accessed or trying to access a read only
location. Don't know what I did when I copied the info on
the floppy but I need to retreive what is on it. HELP
PLEASE!

Never save a file to a floppy or try to open one from a floppy.
If not ruined, try to COPY to the HD and then try to open.

I had the same problem with a CD sent to me from IRS in
Washington DC. The files became corrupted. When I
opened the CD on a Windows 98 and excel 2000 system the
files opened but data had disappeared. There must be a
major bug in EXCEL. Have you gotten any response? I
have a new Dell Computer and got the software with the
purchase. Please post another message if you got a
response. I thought I posted a message yesterday but
could not find it today. IRS is very interested if this
is a new problem with EXCEL.

Don't open/save files to any removable media, copy from the media to you
HD and open from there and, conversely, save to the HD and copy to the
media.
All CD files will be "read only". After you copy the file to the HD,
find it, right click select "Properties->General" and de-select the
"read only" option.

Not a bug in Excel. It is rule of thumb with any application, do not open
directly from CD, Floppy, or other portable medium. Copy file to HD, open from
there.
