Only MS programs allowed in Tray ?

I have XP Home w/SP2 and all latest updates.
At least 4 third party applications that have system tray
capability, in one case necessity, are not allowed on it.

Why ? Please don't tell me that software companies like
ZoneAlarm and ATI Technologies are too dumb to know
how to do it.

The MS Defender (Beta) has no problems with the tray.
Other MS products like Office etc likewise. But I have
had to literally stop using some 3rd party software because
it relies entirely (ZoneAlarm) on the system tray. As dumb as
that is on their part, their app should have assess to the tray.

What is the solution for this? I've tried everything including many
so called tips websites that claim to solve this problem. They don't.

Wow, I don't think I've ever run ZA without it being in the systray.

There is a setting in ZA under Alerts and Logs > Main > Advanced >
system tray alert you can check.
Mine's uncheck'd and works fine (sits in the system tray)

I have 7 programs in the systray, 1 is an MS application (volume
control)

There aren't any restrictions through XP, per se, about what can be in
the tray. It's an issue with the program itself. One thing you can try
is to turn off two services. From Start | Run type in services.msc.
Scroll to these two services, stop them if started and set to disabled.
See if that helps.

SSDP Discovery Service
Universal Plug and Play Device Host

I Think You're misunderstanding the issue, I've had problems with ZA PRO and
would never again put this on my pc, Talk about a resource hog and constant
nags.
but anyway, I think your having installation issues, are you installing ZA
and it just disappears while seeming to run?? I had this issue recently, it
was due to conflict with windows firewall running at the same time. how bout
detailing what is exactly happening. this would help!

Every application that can use the systray does so. You mention ZoneAlarm
not doing it - well I use ZA and the icon's right there where it should be.

Don't know about ATI, but I have used ZoneAlarm with no problems like
you mentioned. The problems I had with ZoneAlarm were conflicts with
other programs like some of my favorite games. You MAY be experiencing
software conflicts!

I finally came down to AVAST 4, which is free and does the job nicely.

You may well be experiencing software/system conflicts. As I recall
(???) Zone Alarm also doesn't like Service Pack 2.

I recommend Kasperski or AVAST for your virus protection.

AVAST has served me well for about 3 years now.

AGAIN, I think your problems will be resolved if you stop using
ZoneAlarm and try AVAST 4 or Kasperski.

Good luck!

What is "not allowing" it? Certainly not Windows. What are the
specific text of the error messages you get?

You'll have to ask the manufacturers of those various applications why
they're not working properly. There's nothing I can find in WinXP that
allows the user to permit/prohibit System Tray icons by manufacturer.
At this very moment, I've System Tray icons for products made by AVAST,
Epson, and NVidia.

A good place to start is "what is wrong with your setup".
I am at present looking at the tray, and there sit ZA, Node32, HP Digital
Imaging Monitor, and Quick Time (to name only a few) in plain sight.
