I have three computers on my network. Everything was ok. Suddenly
computers B and C did not see computer A, but computer A saw both B and C
and could read and write to them. About 20 minutes later B and C fixed
themselves. Any ideas? Is there some timing refresh.

Note A is running XP pro and B and C XP all have latest updates. B and C
are wireless to a Linksys router connected via cable to A All could connect
to the internet.

Thanks in advance,

Sarah

Sarah,

I'd bet you have a browser problem here, and I'm not talking about Internet
Explorer either.

Check for browser conflict - use "browstat status" to diagnose:

Read more about the browser:

This also happened to a friend of mine. After weeks of his laptop(XP
Home) not being able to access the desktop(XP pro) (OK the other way
around) we finally were able to access the desktop both file sharing and
the desktop printer. To get it working we had enabled the guest account
on both PC's and put the same user name on both with a password.
Everything was working fine. In a matter of a half hour when he tried
to access the desktop here came the unable to connect message again! It
( the desktop) changed something on its own! The desktop does have
Norton IS and we tried disabling that after the problem cropped up but
no-go. It had worked fine earlier with Norton active. This is truly
frustrating!
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

The "now you see it, now you don't" scenario is frequently caused by a browser
conflict. Please read my article, it explains everything (I think):

Chuck,

Does this mean we should disable the browser on the laptop? There has
never been an issue with the desktop being able to access the laptop it
has alwas been the other way around. We did have it working (the
desktop) if only we can keep it that way the next time.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

Enabling / disabling the browsers is a tuning issue. If you disable all of the
browsers but one, and the computer that should be the master browser is offline
for any reason, you'll get "access denied" when trying to open Network
Neighborhood. OTOH, if you have 2 browsers, and one goes offline then online
for any reason, you'll end up with a fragmented domain, with 2 master browsers.

For a mobile server (ie your laptop), you're better off disabling the browser,
to prevent browser conflicts. You do need to know the complications though.

Chuck,

We disabled the browser on the wireless laptop but still cannot access
the desktop. This is most frustrating because it was working fine
albeit just a half hour or so. The desktop can still access the laptop.
What now?

Thanks

Brian,

Is this the same problem we worked on in the other thread for so long?

Let's take a step back and look at updated "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all"
for each computer.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp>

Here's a new issue that just got identified elsewhere:

Oh Brian, I'm having a devil of a time finding your posts, you seem to have
dropped them under a thread started by someone else. Could you maybe start a
new thread?

Chuck,

I will as soon as I get Browser.txt and tpconfig.txt and I will post
them under a new thread.

Thanks,

Brian
