One partition on drive that is less than drive size

I recently ordered XP Pro from MSDNAA and installed it on my (aging...) HP
Pavilion. While attempting a clean install, I went to delete the recovery
partition which was hidden as well as the C:\ partition but couldn't do so
with the C:\ drive (apparently there were some setup files for XP Pro there).

So now I have my 40GB hard drive as is shown here

with this much space shown:

Is there any way to, in short, recover this left over partition that isn't
around (as far as I know), and is just sort of sitting there?

Thanks for the quick reply.

As for these options:
Partition Magic costs $70... as a starving college student, I really don't
feel like paying more for partition software than I did for the OS ($13).

BootIt Next Gen. is free, and I like that but I don't see any instructions
on what to do for my specific case in which I want to increase the size of my
partition, not decrease it...
Should I just follow the instructions as is and instead increase the size of
it? And if so, what size whould I make it?

Thanks
