Help! Just started getting this message. On startup, XP
goes to check my hard drive. It says "checking file
system on C:/. The type of NTFS. Can not open volume for
direct access." Then XP starts up.

This can't be good. But hopefully, it's any easy fix.

Do you have ZoneAlarm installed and did you recently upgrade it to
version 5.0? It has been reported that ZoneAlarm 5.0 may be the root cause
of your problem. Uninstalling ZoneAlarm Version 5.0 solves the issue.

If you recently upgraded to ZA 5. Free Version I suggest
you uninstall it and than schedule another File Check on
boot up. I had to do this, having the same problem you
have, after uninstalling ZA5...the system file checker
performed perfectly on bootup. I have put ZA 4.5 version
back on my system now. All is well.......
If not ZA5 I suggest you look into any new Firewall or VP
Program you recently installed...... GOOD LUCK
