because it is loaded with too many things and viruses
slowing it down. when i enter the cd key from computer
registry i am told the key is invalid. the computer was
activated with the key how can it not work now?

sumthin' doesn't sound quite right here...me thinks we have a Blackbeard
tryin' to thru the back door.....

Pete,

Your Product Activation Key is either on the packaging for the CD (if it is
was a retail product), or was on a sticker on the wrapper for an OEM product
or may have been on a sticker attached to your PC.
You should only use the Product Key on one of these 3 locations to activate
your copy of Windows XP.
It is possible if you are using one of the products that claim to be able to
get the Product Activation Key out of the registry you are reading the PC
manufacturers bulk key that was initially used to install Windows XP to your
PC. That key will not work with the CD they supplied you. You must use the
correct key from the label on your PC or the media packaging.

Greetings --

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5,"
or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense
to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation.
Also, be sure that your CapsLock if _off_ while entering the Product
Key.
