Just out of curiosity why do you want to install an older version of XP onto
your computer in the first place?

Hi Simon,

Before you do something that drastic, you might want to consider
running a virtual machine.

Microsoft recently made their Virtual PC 2004 Freeware. I downloaded
it an am loving it. My system Is still WinXPpe. But if I need to run
some older software I just run my Win98se virtual machine. I have
not found any of my old software that will not run in the virtual
machine. What's really cool is you can bridge network connections
and build link to you normal drives and directories.

The ONLY bad thing about Virtual PC is that it does not recognize
USB devices. Since none of my old software talked to USB devices it
really isn't a problem. The only reason I mention it is because I
move stuff around on my thumb drive all the time. When I need to
move a file running under Virtual PC I have to move it onto my
regular hard disk then move it from there to the thumb drive. An
extra step . . . but when you consider that Virtual PC lets me run,
WinXPpe, Windows 2000pe, Win98se, WinME, FreeDOS and MS-DOS 6.22 it
is worth the extra step.

Ciao . . . C.Joseph

While using Virtual PC is an option the OP subject heading says 'older
version of xp over new version' It should be remembered that, for licencing
purposes, a Virtual machine is actually classed as 'another' pc even though
it is on the same pc. Therefore if, for example, you already are running XP
on your PC and you then install the 'same' copy of XP onto a Virtual machine
you would 'technically' be in breach of the End User Licence agreement. The
same applies to installing the same copy of XP on another partition on the
same machine.

Of course if you are using Virtual machine to install 'older' copies of an
operating system, i.e, Win 98, ME, 2000 etc on the same machine as the one
containign XP, then, so long as you have a valid licence for this older
software then you should have no problem.
