The Help32 system (like the old 98 help) has completely stopped functioning on all
programs. The newer help system works OK.

Please help! It is a nightmare. I cannot open help files from either a program or via
explorer!

Jim;
*.hlp or *.chm files?
*.hlp files should open with Windows Winhlp32 Stub.
*.chm files should open with Microsoft® HTML Help Executable.

I guess you said the Help32 system, so *.hlp files.

Try this:
Open Windows Explorer | Right click an *.hlp file | Properties |
What does Opens with: show? | If NOT Windows Winhlp32 Stub >>>

To See All File Extensions
1. On the Tools menu in My Computer or Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.

To Change File Associations
File Types tab | Scroll down to and highlight: HLP |
If the Details for 'HLP' extension does not show:
Windows Winhlp32 Stub | click the Change button |
Browse button | Navigate to >> C:\WINDOWS\System32\winhlp32.exe |
Double click winhlp32.exe | Open button | Check Always use the selected
program
to open this kind of file | OK | Apply

I had the problem where .hlp files would not open at all. I did a search for winhlp32.* and found that that winhlp32.exe in the system folder was 8kb. The same file was in C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and was 261kb. The small one didn't wark but the larger one did. So something must have corrupted it. I just copied the larger file over the smaller one and I am able to view help files again.
