Old tool bar feature

Can anyone tell me how to set Windows XP so that I will
have the section at the top for typing in links and then
going directly to them. Guess this is the "old way" but I
liked it so much better. I could paste links directly,
etc. Now I just have a search bar that takes me to a page
with choices for sites.

Actually, it sounds like what you have is a browser hijacker. Get rid of
spyware/hijackers on your computer by scanning with tools like Spybot
S&D and/or Ad-aware. After your computer is clean, you should see a
return to the "normal" way of working.
