Occasionally, the "My Computer" or the "My Documents" icon on my desktop
reverts to the old Windows 98 version. I've gone to Desktop
Properties/Desktop/Customize Desktop/Restore Defaults and had some success,
but lately that procedure hasn't worked. Is there another way? Does anyone
know why this would have happened?

I remember this happening years ago on my old computer (It was soon after
XP was released). Then around about the SP1 release, the problem seemed to
vanish. I haven't experienced the problem since.

I think it was caused by the older XP Powertoys.

The solution was a registry edit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Desktop\WindowMetrics
"Shell Icon BPP"= <Set to your desktop colour>
ie. if you are on 16-bit colour: set to "16"
if you are on 32-bit colour: set to "32".

Are you on 32-bit display or 16-bit display?
What's the value of the above registry key?
