I've got a new Radeon 9200 video card a new machine using XP Home
I've got 1 old DOS application that I NEED to run, but when I open
that particular application, the text on the screen turns to junk. I
tried "compatiblility" options, doesn't help any.
I've had this same card running under W98SE before upgrading
to XP, and have had 2 different monitors, all with same result,
jumbled text. It's the latest driver. It all worked fine with the
old Diamond Viper 770 card.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Bonnie

Hi, Bonnie. Unfortunately, you already know the answer and it is one
that you don't like. Windows XP is a totally different operating system
from DOS and Win9x and does not include any version of real DOS. You've
tried everything to get your older DOS program to work under XP. The
only options are: 1) see if the DOS program mftr. is still around and
if there is an XP-compatible version; 2) keep a Win98 box around to run
this application.

Sorry, and good luck,

Malke

I can run any (and I mean ANY) legacy DOS application I've tried under
Windows 2000 Pro, which also has no real DOS. Microsoft did something
different in XP DOS emulation. It's not just that there is no real DOS,
the DOS emulation in XP is just lousey.

If things aren't broken why change them? What effect would having a
decent DOS emulation have on all the "wonderfulness" of XP?

This is something I believe M$ needs to wake up to - a whole LOT of
people really do NEED to be able to run legacy DOS applications
reliably. As far as I'm concerned DOS emulation is broken in XP.

Broken compared to what? (I'm unclear if you are saying these apps DID work
on W2K or DID NOT). What apps are you running? I've got DOS apps that work
under XP just fine, quite "heavyweight" ones too.

Yes, they work under Win2K and not under XP.

The one that bugs me the most (because I frequently need to use it) is
RCONSOLE.EXE (a DOS based Netware utility) works fine under 2K but not
for XP.

Thanks for all the input, but I don't believe my problem is directly
related to XP, as I had the same problem in 98SE with the new video
card. I'm thinking my problem is with the card/Windows/DOS
relationship.
Thanks again, Bonnie
