OL2k3: defining views... that S**KS!

Hi,

I have over the last few weeks improved the view of my main folder. What I
have done is to add rules, so that e-mails from relatives, colleagues,
friends, mailing-lists, etc. get assigned a particular colour. I find it
pretty convenient, as it allows me at a glance to see what I have received.

Anyway, I have over the last few weeks, refined those rules, so they know
about all the people who regularly send me e-mails. Until a few minutes ago,
it was working like a gem.

My view had a special name, so that I could keep track of it. My inbox
contains several (sub-)folders, so I applied that "great" view of mine to
all of them (what a pain already! Is there really no easier way of doing
that?!). Over the weeks, I have been refining my view (when the main folder
is selected), and not the current view, i.e. I went through the Custom View
Organiser, selected my view and modified it. The problem, however, is that I
noticed that in my (sub-)folders, the view was not updated. So it appears to
me like the view I initially created is valid only for the main folder. In
my (sub-)folders, it appears like I just copied the state of my view at the
time I applied it to my (sub-)folders. What's going on?! That s**ks!! :((

Now, the worst part is that I just selected one of my sub-folders and
selected the "Message" view and then my special view, in the hope that it
would set it to my "main" view... Well, BAD idea!! That simply screwed up
everything including my "main" view!

In other words, I have 99% of my "main" view's settings, because of a VERY
BAD implementation of that feature in OL2k3 (and I would think it's the same
in OL2k/XP).

Sorry, but I really hate it! This is such a waste of my time! Can't M$ do
things right?!

Question: does anyone know of a professional (as opposed to a kid's) tool
that more or less does the same as OL2k3? I would really hate having to
develop my own software. I have better things to do, and that's why I
naively got OL2k3...

Alan.

PS: feels good to let it out, even if it's not going to make any difference!
Sigh for that...

I'll bet you right clicked on the header row and use Custom... to edit the
main view. You need to define the view - View, Arrange By, Customize, Define
or use the last option in the view toolbar dropdown to open Define Views.
Then you select the view by name, not as <current view> and modify it.
Always make a copy of the view when finished so you can easily restore it
when it gets messed up.

once you create a view, apply it to the subfolders and as long as you use
define views, the view is updated for all folders that aren't using a
one-off view.

if you want the view to apply to all folders, change the message view and
make a copy for the times the view gets messed up.

Well... you lost your bet... I did: View, Arrange By, Current View, Define
Views. From there, I selected my special view and modified it.

What I did for this was: View, Arrange By, Current View and then select my
special view. Is that different from what you are saying?

I just hate the idea of having to make a copy for the times things get
messed up (by OL2k3, I assume). One should never have to do something like
that.

Thanks, I didn't know about that link.

Well, there are so many people posting problems, and so little answers, that
this forum is close to being completely useless.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the time you spent replying to me.
It's just that I have never seen a newsgroup with so many unanswered
messages.

Thanks again, Alan.
