Hi all -

I recently restored an outlook.pst from one machine to another.
Now when I type an email to "Joe Smith," outlook can't find his email, even though he is in my Contacts folder.

Any hints?
Thanks,
A.J.

Auto-complete was not introduced until Outlook 2000.

What are you trying to do - have Outlook automatically fill in the address
after typing a few letters? What happens if you use Alt+K?

Yes, i want OL to fill in the address after I type enough characters to make it unique. With my old .PST, this used to work in OL 97, but it does not work with my new .PST.

I think this might be related to some problem OL is having with finding my Contacts address book. I say that because when i first loaded the new .PST, i got a message that said 'The delivery location for mail has changed in this profile. Your shortcuts will not work. Do you want Outlook to recreate your shortcuts? Your shortcuts will be deleted?"

The first time I saw this dialog, I answered No. Then when I clicked on Contacts in the shortcut bar, it couldn't find them. I had to delete that shortcut, then make a new one by manually dragging the folder from the folder list to the shortcut bar. That worked. But I had to do the same thing for the Calendar, Sent Items, etc.

I'm wondering if somehow Outlook can't find the Contacts when it tries to verify an address. Even though I have "Joe SMith" in my Contacts, the email says "Can't find address for Joe Smith in Contacts. Do you want to create a new address?"

Is there a way to check or force where Outlook is looking for addressees?

Many thanks,
A.J.

That's not autocompletion (which did not become available until Outlook
2002). That's autoresolution. You just need to re-enable your Outlook
Address Book Service.
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.

Yes. With my old .PST file, Outlook 97 DID fill in the address after I
typed a few letters, at least when I tabbed down into the CC field or
subject line or message text. Now, with the new .PST, it won't do that.
I think this might be related to the fact that when I first loaded the new
..PST, I got a message that said something like "The delivery folder for mail
has changed with this profile. Your shortcuts may not work. Check
Microsoft Outlook Help for information on how to change the location where
mail is delivered. Do you want Outlook to recreate your shortcuts? All your
shortcuts will be deleted."
At first, I chose "No" to this dialog box. When i then clicked the
Outlook shortcuts for Contacts or Calendar, they couldn't find those
folders. Then I manually re-created the shortcuts by dragging the folder
from the folder list to the shortcut bar. Those new shortcuts worked, but
still the individual email doesn't seem to recognize that "Joe Smith" is in
my Contacts - it says "No address found for Joe Smith - do you want to
create a new address?"
I can't find anything in Help to fix this. Is there anyway to make sure
that Outlook is looking in the Contacts file as opposed to the Personal
Address Book? (IS the PAB in 97?)
Many Thanks,
A.J.

Thank you, Russ.
I got the idea to do that from another post.
I did both steps, the Right click on the folder and then the Addressing tab in Services.

It seemed to work but then outlook wouldn't restart with that .PST. It was causing an invalid page fault. So i re-copyied an old PST again, let outlook rebuild the shortcut bar, and did the two steps as before. Now it seems to be working....fingers crossed!

Thanks,
A.J.
