OL 2003 (SP1): ZIP files not visible in dialog for attachement!?!?!?

I don't know if this is a bug from Service Pack 1 but when I try to attach a
ZIP file to an OL 2003 email message, it is not visible in the dialog box.
For some reason, OL is blocking visiblity of this and obviously, since I
cannot see it, I cannot attach it!!

I also noticed that when I use the SEND TO---> MAIL RECIPIENT feature by
right clicking on a ZIP, the file is not attached to a new message. (NOTE
that I use a shortcut to "Outlook.exe /c ipm.note" for this so that a new
HTML message is created instead of plain text).

Is there a reg fix that anyone knows about to counteract this terrible bug?
Can someone without SP1 installed try this and tell me whether you see the
same prob? If not, I will uninstall SP1!!!

Thanks for any and all help on this...

Are you using Windows XP and do you have a 3rd party zip program installed
(e.g. WinZip, WinRAR, .etc)? The reason that I ask is that Windows XP has a
built-in handler for ZIP files. This built-in handler that makes zip files
act as folders might be throwing Outlook off. I've found that those with a
3rd party program can't duplicate this issue.

In most cases to the above, Windows XP built-in handler can be disabled by
unregistering 2 files. I can go search the Windows XP support group for
what needs to be unregistered if you can confirm the above.

Change the File Types drop-down to "All Files"

I do use Windows XP (with SP2), as well as WinZip 9, however I tried turning
off all integration of WinZIP with Windows and that had no effect. I also
suspected it might be Windows XP's built in support of ZIP that could be
throwing this off as I don't remember this happening in Windows 2000.

Still, I thought when WinZIP was installed, if you chose to integrate it
into the OS, it automatically disables XP support for ZIP files...

In any event, this problem is getting very annoying.

I am still wondering if anyone who has WinXP and Office 2003 WITHOUT the SP1
applied could tell me if they experience this...

if you google, you'll discover it's been around for at least 6 months.
Doesn't hit too many people.. but enough that you could throw a dinner party
for them. :)

It was already on "All Files" and any ZIP files are NOT being
displayed.

Use Windows Explorer to look at a folder containing zip files. Do they
appear with the WinZip icon or do they appear with the Windows "folder with
zipper" icon? If the latter, that's probably you can't see them in Outlook:
because Windows considers them to be folders, not files.

Try this: when you wish to attach a zip file, create the message. Then open
the folder containing the zip file using Windows Explorer and drag the zip
file to the message. What happens then?

Yeah, I can drag ZIPs into the message and then it works... that is what
I've been doing since I couldn't do it with SEND TO and I couldn't do it
using the Insert Attachment...

Very frustrating!!

You didn't answer my first question:

Keep Winzip 9 (SR1) installed and integrated. Try typing this command.

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

This tells XP not to treat *.zip files as folders.

To undo the above.

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Diane -- THANK YOU!

Solved the problem.

sorry... has a winzip icon...

diane actually gave me the solution in the below post. this turned out to be
a prob with the compressed folders feature in XP. it just needed to be
disabled.

I had the same problem and I do not have any Service packs installed for XP.
But the solution regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll
entered into the "Run" box fixed the problem for me as well.
Thanks to all who came up with this fix...it was "bugging" me since I send a
lot of zip files.
