I have been asking questions in a variety of places, and I've been
getting a lot of very negative feedback.

"Go read this! Go read that!"

My problem is that while I'm very bright, and while I'm pretty good
with computers (having spent over 30 years working with them as a
writer)

I have a reading impairment (I don't understand tech data).

Therefore, I need nice folks like you to "boil it down" for me,
whenever possible.

I figure if 50 of you have had the same problem, I don't need to spend
a week reading about it (as if I could) if you could boil it down to 5
paragraphs.

My current question is this.

I REALLY don't like the built-in "Hints" in XP Pro.

I find it a pain to be reaching for the Start button to reboot
(advisable MOST of the time), but I can't find the dang "Turn off
Computer" option 3/4 of the time because a great big HINT pops up.

I have seen no option for "turning off the hints."

Where is it?

Try Classic Mode instead. You get less balloon tips.
Right-click the Taskbar, select Properties, go to the Start Menu tab
and check "Classic Start Menu"

Try this for the notification area.

If you are brave, you may find other values that control tips under
the Registry key mentioned.
Do a Google search for specific ones if you are unsure what they do.

Jim, you seem to have inadvertently replied to me instead of the OP.

Do you mean TweakUI-Taskbar and Start Menu-uncheck "Enable balloon
tips"? (Description=Uncheck this box to disable balloon tips in all
applications that support Windows Themes.)

I looked at that and tried it before responding but it doesn't seem to
do what the OP asked.

Is there something else in TweakUI I have missed?

Ah! FINALLY found this old post.

What are "hints" ?

When I go to click on the Start button, to turn off the
computer, or to access the menu, as I point my cursor at the
Start button, a balloon "hint" pops up, obscuring the Start
button COMPLETELY. I can guess where the button is, and hit
it successfully, but then the "Turn off Computer" button is
still obscured by the balloon "hint".

Someone else gave me a hint by telling me how to turn off
"hints" in the registry. I'd never been in the registry
before, but I tried the hint, edited the registry item from
a "0" to a "1", and got the system to successfully reboot
and work. Only it didn't turn off the hints.

Still trying to turn off ALL Hint balloons.

Help?

Is this what you initially tried?

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000000

You probably want to disable everything. There's a reg file here:
