Computer greeted me today with the news it was no longer supporting
SP1.... the only thing missing was "have a nice day...." Well does M.S.
know there are users out there with computers that will not run SP2 ? I
know my 2.66 is not "state of the Ark" and reading other postings
confirms I am not alone. Having tried twice to install SP2 I consider
myself lucky I was able to recover back to SP1 on both occasions ( I am
still in awe of this incredible accomplishment) . Has any attempt been
made to make SP2 work for the "mugs" of this world? Not holding my
breath........

Wait, 2.66GHZ or 266Mhz? The first is by no means obsolete, the second
is a boat anchor.

Anyway, RELAX, just because microsoft has discontinued support does NOT
mean that all of a sudden you have to upgrade or die. You can still
download sp6a for NT4, for pete's sake.

Hi

I feel your pain. I just got a computer that came pre-installed with
XPHomeSP2 and it's a nightmare. Things just aren't working right at all. No
spyware, no virus (scanned everything). I think I'm going to have to
reinstall to try to get the problems to go away. I'm sitting here eyeing my
XPSP1 CD, as SP1 with updates actually worked. My old computer couldn't
handle SP2 either' I tried d/l it when it first came out, had to uninstall.
Then ordered the CD, installed, had to uninstall. I even attempted (for me)
the mind-boggling "slipstream" of putting the XPSP1 and SP2 discs onto one
disc. Installed, ended up uninstalling. That computer has now up and died,
hence the new one.

From my and a good friend's experiences with SP2, you're not missing
anything. I'm still trying to get IE to properly display Flash objects with
Sun JavaScript (which I'd never had to d/l before for IE!) - JavaScript's
enabled, Flash is installed, everything looks fine but when I go to a flash
page, I get no images. That's just one of the problems. First thing they
need to do is to go beyond the enable/disable the windows firewall. It's a
mess and it's not even a good firewall - I couldn't even get my ISP's
homepage to open using that! - they need to have a way to completely
uninstall the darn thing, especially if you have another firewall/use a
router/have one of the new nvidia chipset mobos that has a firewall.

I would've gotten a slightly "older" new computer with SP1 which would have
been cheaper and I know it works. But the No Support After October, 2006
just stinks. It's like people are being told to either buy a new
computer/upgrade hardware or use what you have, but know that in the
not-too-distant-future you're SOL if there's a problem with SP1.

Asa far as making SP2 workable for older computers/systems, I don't know if
there's really anything that can be done. It is what it is (if that makes
any sense). The only thing you can do is spend the $$ to upgrade your
computer or, if it's not upgradeable, buy a new(er) one that will accept it.

Again, IMHO, SP2 is not a good thing. Just wait till Vista's released if
you think having problems with getting SP2 on your computer is something.
For Vista you will more than likely have to get a new one.

I don't want to sound like a Microsoft apologist, but are there really
machines out there that are happy with SP1 that can't run SP2?

I admit that I once had some flakiness with an SP2 upgrade. I solved it by
preparing a version of the XP CD with SP2 "slipstreamed" onto it. I used it
as a repair install over the older XP installation, and that went off
without a hitch.

I have never used "autostreamer" but I have read that it greatly simplifies
slipstreaming SP2.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I have had my fair share of problems with SP2 as well. I tried 3 different
times to install SP2 and all 3 times the system would not even boot up after
it rebooted itself when the install was done. Finally, I tried installing
SP2 after a fresh format and reinstall of XP, before all the clutter of
other programs had been added, and this time it actually went off without a
hitch. Same computer, same hardware.

Yes, there are some.
Many of those have programs, usually older, that are not compatible with
SP-2.

Others have issues with SP-2 with an unknown cause.

Still others have a conflict and the user is unable or unwilling to look for
the cause.
Hardware and software are common sources but updated of both are often
available and solve problems.
Consulting with the hardware and software manufacturers usually identifies
possible problems and solutions.

Many solve the problems as you did all by proving some software issue
whether a corrupt file or a program incompatibility.
If issues still persist after a Clean Install, all unnecessary hardware
(sound card, NIC etc) can be temporarily removed before Windows
installation.
If problem persists, it is most likely a hardware issue with no resolution
on that computer.
